BarrelCalc

Icon-30 BarrelCalc is an iPhone app for the storage and calculation of barrel dimension and volume information. It will store fluid level and calculate fluid volume for either vertical or horizontal barrels. Flip the barrel the other way and it will recalculate the fluid level.

It is a sophisticated system for management of any number of barrels (including cylinders). Enter the data once, then re-enter the fluid level as it changes to calculate and track fluid volumes in all your barrels.

How do you use it?

First give your barrel a unique ID.  You can call it 0001, The Merlot Barrel, or whatever you like. Then enter its attributes:

  • Orientation (horizontal or vertical)
  • Shape (parabolic, hyperbolic, xxx, cylindrical)
  • Head diameter or circumference
  • Bung diameter or circumference
  • Length

If these measurements are internal, you’re done.  If external (more likely), you need to enter:

  • Stave thickness
  • Head thickness

You can use metric or English measurements, in any combination. BarrelCalc will convert everything for you.

Then measure and enter the fluid level, and you’ve set up your barrel database.

If you want more accuracy,  you can compensate for slightly inaccurate calculations that may not reflect the precise shape of your barrel: If you enter the actual volume of the barrel in the Edit page, and if you’ve selected the shape closest to the actual shape, then you can select an adjustment factor that is applied to all calculations, and will result in the best estimate of fluid volumes in the barrel.

Each barrel’s volume may be calculated in one of several measurement systems. The following systems are supported:

  • U.S. Liquid: Acre foot, Barrel, Gallon, Quart, Pint, Gill, Fluid ounce, Fluid dram, Minim
  • U.S. Dry: Barrel, Bushel, Peck, Gallon, Quart, Pint
  • U.S. Dimensional: Cubic yard, Cubic foot, Cubic inch
  • Metric: Cubic kilometer, Cubic meter, Cubic decimeter, Cubic centimeter, Cubic mm (microliter), Hectoliter, Decaliter, Liter, Deciliter, Centiliter, Milliliter (cu cm), Microliter (cu mm)
  • British Imperial: Perch, Barrel, Bushel, Peck, Gallon, Quart, Pint, Fluid ounce

Fluid volume is computed from barrel shape and fluid depth (measured at the bung hole). Fluid volume is recalculated immediately upon entering a new depth measurement.

Flipping a barrel from horizontal to vertical, or vice versa, results in a new estimated fluid depth based on barrel shape and the previously-calculated fluid volume.

A full SQL database operates in the background, allowing you to store and retrieve any number of barrels. You can find barrels based on their ID, or sort the barrels according to a number of characteristics (barrel volume, fluid volume, ID, etc.).
